Every great idea starts with a spark—an “aha” moment that plants the seed for something extraordinary. For SasSea Wraps, that spark ignited during a life-changing scuba diving trip in New Jersey, blending necessity, creativity, and a deep love for simplicity and style.
A Tangled Beginning
Picture this: the salty ocean breeze, the thrill of an underwater adventure, and the excitement of exploring hidden wonders beneath the waves. That was me, eagerly gearing up for a scuba diving trip off the coast of New Jersey. To keep my hair in check, I confidently braided it, believing my tried-and-true method would hold up. After all, it had always worked for short swims and beach outings—what could go wrong?
As it turns out, a lot.
40-minutes underwater caused my hair to swell, twist, and tangle into a knot so fierce it would have made a sailor blush. When I surfaced, my so-called secure braid had transformed into an unmanageable mess. No amount of patience, conditioner, or detangling could save it. In the end, I had no choice but to cut it all off—right down to the scalp.
Devastated but determined, I couldn’t shake one thought: Why wasn’t there a hair accessory designed for adventurers like me? Something strong enough to withstand the elements, yet gentle enough to protect my hair?
Then, it happened again.
My daughter, who had recently started diving with me, faced the same tangled nightmare. Watching her struggle sealed the deal. This wasn’t just about me—it was about anyone with long hair who loved adventure. I had to find a solution.
Crafting a Solution
And so, the journey began.
The idea for SasSea Wraps wasn’t an overnight success. It took years of trial and error, countless prototypes, and more than a few failed experiments. My dining table became a makeshift workshop, piled high with fabrics, elastics, and sketches. I researched materials that could handle water, tested different designs, and experimented with ways to make them both stylish and functional.
Some designs were too tight, others too loose. Some materials degraded in water, while others lacked the softness I wanted. But with every test dive, every swim, and every frustrating tangle, I got closer to the perfect balance of durability, comfort, and style.
The Name Behind the Brand
With the design coming together, it was time for a name. It had to capture everything these wraps stood for—ease, beauty, playfulness, and, of course, the ocean. That’s when it hit me: SasSea Wraps.
Sassy, because confidence and style should go hand in hand. Sea, because the ocean is where this journey began. SasSea Wraps wasn’t just a hair accessory; it was a celebration of adventure, resilience, and effortless beauty.
But this is just the beginning.
In Part 2, I’ll share how SasSea Wraps grew from a kitchen-table experiment into a thriving business that brings beauty and practicality to people everywhere.
