What began with one disastrous post-dive hair experience became a mission to solve a problem long-haired divers had simply learned to live with—and ultimately, the invention of SasSea Wraps™.
Our Story: The Dive that Started it All
I’ve been a diver for most of my adult life. After more than 25 years as a PADI Divemaster, along with becoming a TDI-certified Mixed Gas Diver and Full Cave Diver, I’ve spent thousands of hours in and around the water. And throughout all those years, there was one problem I never managed to solve: my hair.
If you’re a diver with long hair, you probably already know exactly what I’m talking about. You secure it before the dive, try braiding it, add another elastic, tuck it where you can—and somehow you still surface with tangles, knots, and sections of hair that seem determined never to separate again.
I tried just about everything over the years. Bubble braids—placing elastics every couple of inches down the entire length of your ponytail—were an almost solution. They did a pretty good job of keeping my hair from matting, but they were tedious to put in and even more tedious to take out. And when you lose a few elastics, some break, or your daughter forgets hers and you have to split your supply with her…well, you’re doomed. Ask me how I know.
Still, for years I treated all of this as simply part of diving. I loved being underwater far more than I hated dealing with my hair afterward, so I put up with it.
Until one particularly disastrous dive.
When I surfaced, my hair was so badly tangled and matted that I genuinely thought I might have to cut it off at the scalp. As I struggled to work through the mess, I remember thinking, there has to be a better way.
That was the moment everything changed.
The bubble braids had already taught me something important: controlling the length of the ponytail worked. The problem was the method. Traditional hair ties secured only the base, while using a dozen little elastics down the length was inconvenient and unreliable. What I needed was a simple way to accomplish the same basic idea with one easy-to-use system.
I wasn’t trying to start a hair accessory company. I was trying to solve my own problem.
What I didn’t realize yet was just how many other long-haired divers—and eventually swimmers, boaters, athletes, travelers, and active women—had been dealing with the same frustrations and simply learned to live with them.
That one frustrating dive, and years of searching for a better solution, became the beginning of SasSea Wraps™.
From Inventor to Manufacturer
What began as a solution to my own diving problem quickly became a much bigger undertaking. Turning an idea into a product meant years of experimenting, testing, refining the design, finding the right materials, and eventually learning how to manufacture something that had never existed before.
Today, SasSea Wraps is an award-winning, women-owned company built around our patent-pending Slip-Proof Grip™ Spiral Hair Tie system. Every step of that journey—from the earliest prototypes to seeing our products handcrafted in production—has reinforced the same goal: create something that genuinely works and never compromise on the reason I invented it in the first place.
Built for More Than Diving
Scuba diving may have inspired SasSea Wraps, but I quickly discovered that divers weren’t the only ones struggling to control and protect long hair. Swimmers, snorkelers, boaters, wakeboarders, runners, cyclists, travelers, and active women were dealing with many of the same frustrations.
That realization helped SasSea Wraps evolve from a solution I created for myself into a performance hair accessory designed for movement. Whether you’re underwater, on the water, at the gym, or simply dealing with a windy day, the goal remains the same: secure, comfortable hair control without sacrificing the activities you love.
More Than a Hair Accessory
I’ve always believed that building a company should mean providing more value than simply selling a product. Solving the immediate problem was where SasSea Wraps began, but helping people understand how to better care for and protect their hair has become an important part of where we’re going.
That’s why we created our Healthy Hair Knowledge Center, a growing library of science-backed educational resources covering hair health, damage prevention, breakage, water exposure, heat, growth and retention, and more. If we can help someone protect their hair—even when they’re not using our product—we’re still accomplishing something worthwhile.
